“All are given their own section of the wall.” Educators made the list.Pope Leo XIV, Magnifica Humanitas, paragraph 13

The Church isn't anti AI. It's pro human.

In his first encyclical, Pope Leo XIV writes that technology is not an enemy of humanity and not evil in itself, but that it is never neutral, because it takes on the character of the people who build, fund, regulate and use it. So the real choice is not yes or no to AI. It is Babel or Jerusalem (Magnifica Humanitas, 4 and 9).

Babel

A tower built for power. One language, one plan, a name made for a few.

Jerusalem

A city rebuilt together. Every family handed its own section of the wall.

Magnifica Humanitas

Pope Leo XIV's first encyclical, On Safeguarding the Human Person in the Time of Artificial Intelligence. Signed May 15, 2026, on the 135th anniversary of Rerum Novarum, and released May 25, 2026. It puts the dignity of the human person at the center of every decision about technology, and it devotes a full section to schools.

Antiqua et Nova

A note from the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Dicastery for Culture and Education, approved by Pope Francis and released January 28, 2025, the feast of Saint Thomas Aquinas. AI used prudently can widen access and give students immediate feedback, but it cannot replace the indispensable relationship between teacher and student (80 to 82).

Saint Carlo Acutis

The first millennial saint wrote code.

  • He built a website for God. He taught himself to code and catalogued every reported Eucharistic miracle in the world, plus the Marian apparitions the Church recognizes.
  • He set his own limit. One hour of video games a week, his mother says, so he would not get hooked.
  • Pope Leo XIV canonized him on September 7, 2025. The same pope who wrote the encyclical on your screen.

He was fifteen. Your 8th graders are almost there. That is who we are preparing.

Born May 3, 1991, in London. Died October 12, 2006. Feast day October 12. Often called the patron saint of the internet, an informal title. Notre Dame, Saint Carlo Acutis ↗

So what is AI, actually?

Software that learned from millions of examples instead of being told every step. The chatbots work like the world's most well read guesser. You type something, and it predicts, one word at a time, what most likely comes next.

___

Congratulations. You are a large language model. It is picking what sounds right. It is not a person, it does not know your students, and it is not always right. That is why it can sound brilliant and still be wrong.

Made up numbers, just to show the idea. Real chatbots weigh thousands of possible next words, very fast.

What could St. Charles start this semester?

Here is what good support looks like from a principal, a pastor and the diocese. Tap the ones already in place.

  1. A clear, written AI policy, built with teachersFrom the school or the diocese, drafted with teachers and families at the table.
  2. A school or diocesan account you can actually useWith FERPA generally out of the picture, the contract behind that account is the main thing protecting student information.
  3. Real formation, on the clockHands on time to learn the tools (Magnifica Humanitas, 145).
  4. A list of approved tools, already checkedPrivacy terms, data retention and training rules reviewed before a tool lands in your classroom.
  5. A fairness check on those toolsSo they work as well for multilingual learners and students with disabilities as for everyone else.
  6. Clear red lines, and an easy way to ask questionsGrading, discipline, IEPs, placement, counseling, pastoral care, crisis and surveillance stay human.
  7. Simple guidance on telling familiesReady to use language for when AI helped draft feedback, comments or a note home.
  8. A shared approach to AI detectorsSo no student is accused on a false positive.
  9. Common rules for student AI useA school wide starting point, so every assignment isn't its own negotiation.
  10. Time for AI literacy in the scheduleIncluding in religion and ethics classes, where the Church's own teaching on AI now belongs.
